FAQ
Questions people ask before they hire a lawyer
If yours is not here, write to us. A lawyer answers.
Do you represent people who have been sued, or only people who want to sue?
Both. We act for plaintiffs and defendants, and we tell you which role we think suits your situation when we first talk.
What does a first conversation cost?
We tell you before you book. If there is a charge for the first meeting, it is stated on the contact page and credited if you hire us.
How are fees set?
The fee agreement says how we bill, what a retainer covers and which costs you pay in addition, such as filing fees and expert witnesses. You receive it in writing before any work begins.
I have been served. How long do I have?
The papers state a deadline for responding, and it is short. Call us the day you receive them, and do not ignore them.
How long will my case take?
Some end in weeks and some take more than a year. After reading your documents we give you a range, and we revisit it at each stage.
Will my case go to trial?
Most civil cases settle. We prepare each as though it will be tried, and we tell you honestly when a settlement offer is worth taking.
Do I need to come to the office?
Usually once, to meet the lawyers and sign the fee agreement. After that we work by phone, email and video, and meet in person when it helps.
What if my dispute is outside the four kinds you take?
We say so on the first call and, where we can, point you to a firm that handles it.
